Karimen 仮免 · Honmen 本免 · Gaimen kirikae 外免切替 · 90% to pass

Pass the written test in English.

Ten topic papers, 1,100+ practice questions, all written the way the real Japanese licence papers are written: true-or-false statements with the same phrasing traps that catch people out. Every question, answer and explanation is in English.

The karimen (仮免), honmen (本免) and gaimen kirikae (外免切替) written tests all draw on the same traffic rules, so these papers prepare you for whichever one you are sitting.

Sample question · Paper 03

"When the road surface is wet, the stopping distance of a vehicle is roughly the same as on a dry road, provided the tyres are new."

○ True ✕ False

Explanation: braking distance on a wet surface can be up to twice the dry-road figure regardless of tyre wear. Statements that use "roughly the same" are almost always false.

Rule change · October 2025

The written test got much harder in October 2025. Our papers follow the new format.

For licence conversion (gaimen kirikae), the traffic-knowledge check jumped from 10 quick questions to the full 50-question format with a 90% pass mark, the same scope and difficulty as the karimen exam Japanese learners sit. Questions are text-based true-or-false statements drawn from 22 areas of the traffic rules, and the practical test is now marked at full karimen strictness. Applicants must also show a certificate of residence (jūminhyō), which ended conversions on a tourist stay.

Rules differ by prefecture and change without much notice, so always confirm the current format with your local licence centre before you book.

Recent rule changes

Questions older question banks still get wrong

Many practice sets online were written before these changes and still teach the old rule. Every answer in our papers was checked against the rules in force in September 2026. These three are from the papers.

Changed 1 September 2026 · Paper 01

"On a general road without marking and road sign, maximum speed limit is 60 km/h."

Older papers: ○ True
Now: ✕ False

On general roads with no centre line, lane lines or physical separation, the legal limit for cars is now 30 km/h. 60 km/h applies only where there is a centre line or lanes and no speed sign.

Changed April 2025 · Paper 09

"Motorcycles under 125 cc can be driven with a regular car licence."

Older papers: ✕ False, because a regular licence only covers mopeds of 50 cc or less
Now: It depends

125 cc-class bikes limited to 4.0 kW now count as mopeds, which a regular licence covers. Other motorcycles up to 125 cc still need a motorcycle licence, so our paper words the question to have one answer.

Changed April 2024 · Paper 03

"I drove a large truck at 100 km/h on the national expressway."

Older papers: ✕ False, because large trucks are limited to 80 km/h
Now: ✕ False, with a different reason

The expressway limit for large trucks rose from 80 to 90 km/h. The answer is still False, but a paper that explains it with 80 km/h teaches you the wrong number for the next question.

All ten papers plus ten mock tests, ¥4,000

1,100+ topic questions with every answer key and the full glossary, and on top of that ten mock test papers for self-evaluation: mixed-topic sets sat under the real 50-question format, each with its own score sheet at the 90% pass line.

Buying the nine paid topic papers separately costs ¥4,500, so the bundle is ¥500 less and the mock tests come at no extra cost.

How the test works

The provisional written test

Questions
50 true-or-false statements, marked ○ or ✕ on a paper answer sheet
Pass mark
90%, meaning 45 correct out of 50. There is no partial credit.
Time
30 minutes. Most people finish in 20 and use the rest to re-read.
Language
English is offered at most prefectural centres (Tokyo runs the test in 20 languages), so confirm yours when you book
If you fail
You can re-book, pay the test fee again and sit it on a later day

This 50-question format applies to the karimen test and the gaimen kirikae knowledge check. The honmen (full licence) test covers the same rules in a longer paper: 90 true-or-false questions plus five illustrated hazard questions in 50 minutes, with the same 90% pass mark. Fees, booking rules and available languages are set prefecture by prefecture.

Converting a foreign licence

01
Gather documents
Licence, official Japanese translation (JAF or your embassy), passport showing 3+ months in the issuing country after issue (bring old passports too), residence card, juminhyo (with nationality and residence status, but without My Number), photo.
02
Book at your licence centre
Conversion is handled by appointment at the centre for your registered address. Waits of several weeks are normal in the big cities, and many centres ask you to bring an interpreter if you do not speak Japanese, so check when you book.
03
Document check and eyesight test
Vision of at least 0.7 with both eyes and 0.3 per eye, recognising red, yellow and blue, and an interview about how you got your licence and your driving history abroad.
04
Knowledge test
Applicants from the 29 exempt countries and regions (including Australia, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Korea, Taiwan and four US states) skip the tests. Everyone else sits the 50-question written test, then a practical test on the centre course, and this is where these papers do their work.
05
Practical test and issue
A closed-course driving test with a strict deduction sheet. Pass and the Japanese licence is issued the same day.
FAQ

Questions before you buy

International Driving Permits, conversion, the My Number licence and expired licences are covered in the driving licence guides.

Are the papers really all in English?
Yes. Every question, answer and explanation is written in English. Japanese appears only in the glossary, where the sign and legal terms are given in Japanese with the English meaning beside them.
What are the ten mock tests?
Ten extra question papers included only with the ¥4,000 bundle. Each is a mixed-topic set in the real 50-question format with a score sheet, so you can sit them under time and check where you still stand.
Is there a free online mock test?
Yes. The free mock test is 50 true-or-false questions in 30 minutes with the real 45-out-of-50 pass mark, marked instantly with an explanation for every question. It uses the karimen and gaimen kirikae format and the same rules the honmen test draws on, so it is practice for all three.
Are these the actual exam questions?
No. They are original practice questions written to match the format, topics and phrasing style of the official test. Nothing is reproduced from an exam paper.
Which paper should I start with?
Paper 07, which is free. After that, Paper 01 on signs is the one most people lose marks on, so it is the usual next buy.
Do these papers work for the honmen (full licence) test too?
Yes. The karimen, honmen and gaimen kirikae written tests all draw on the same traffic rules. The honmen paper is longer (90 true-or-false questions plus five illustrated hazard questions in 50 minutes) but the statements are written the same way, so the same preparation applies.
How do I get the files?
Your PDFs are emailed to the address you enter at checkout, normally within 10 minutes. Keep the email and you can print the papers at a convenience store later. Payment by card. If nothing arrives, check your spam folder and then write to hello@karimenen.com.
Do I still need these if my country is exempt?
Probably not for the test itself, since exempt applicants skip it, but the rules still apply once you are driving and many people use the free paper as a quick check.
