Free online mock test for Japan's driving licence exam: karimen, honmen and gaimen kirikae
50 true-or-false statements about Japan's traffic rules, 30 minutes on the clock, 45 correct to pass, and an explanation for every question once you submit. That is exactly the format of the karimen (provisional licence) test and of the gaimen kirikae (foreign licence conversion) knowledge check. The honmen (full licence) test asks 90 statements plus 5 illustrated questions in 50 minutes on the same rules, so this is honmen practice too. Free, in English, no signup, nothing to download.
Read each statement, decide whether it is ○ True or ✕ False, and tap the answer. Statements are written the way the real paper writes them: the trap is usually one word such as "always", "may", "must" or "enough". You can change an answer any time before you submit.

When it is foggy, you should not drive with your headlights on because they might blind the oncoming drivers.
False. In foggy conditions you should switch your headlights on, keeping them on low beam so the light doesn't scatter back toward you.
When the engine stalled on a railway crossing, as an emergency measure, shift into first or second gear and use the cell motor to move the vehicle out from the railway crossing (except for automatic vehicles and manual vehicles with clutch start systems).
True. Put the car in first or second gear and turn the starter without pressing the clutch; the starter motor can move the car off the crossing. This does not work in automatics or cars with a clutch start system.
When driving at night in an urban area with heavy traffic, you should always keep your headlights lowered.
True. Where traffic is heavy at night, such as on city streets, switch your headlights to low beam so you do not dazzle other road users.
When crossing a railroad crossing, drivers should change the gear from low gear to the higher gears to cross the railroad crossing quickly.
False. Never shift gears while inside a railway crossing; keep the vehicle in low gear and hold a steady speed all the way across.
The method of hand signal for a U-turn and reversing (backing up) are the same.
False. A U-turn actually shares its hand signal with a right turn, not with reversing; to signal reversing, extend an arm diagonally and swing it back and forth with the palm turned backward.
When you think the headlights of oncoming vehicles are too bright, turn your eyes slightly toward to the left in front of you to protect your eyes, while continuing to pay attention to the traffic ahead.
True. Shifting your gaze slightly to the left front keeps oncoming headlights from dazzling you, while you still watch the road ahead.
You can drive general motorized bicycle with wearing sandals.
False. Sandals can slip off or catch on the pedals and controls. Wear shoes that let you work the brake and gears properly.
Drivers must obey the instructions from the police officers' hand signs.
True. Where a police officer or traffic warden gives hand signals, you must follow them, even if they differ from the traffic light.
You do not need to consider about others as long as you are following the rules.
False. Good driving takes more than knowing the rules; it also calls for solid skill, understanding of regulations, and courtesy so you never get in someone else's way.
Drivers must observe the traffic regulation for safety driving.
True. Traffic rules exist to keep all road users safe, so every driver must follow them.
You may cross a railway crossing without stopping if you are following the car in front of you.
False. Following another car doesn't exempt you: you still need to come to a full stop before the tracks and confirm it's safe.
You should not throw cigarette butts and trash from your car.
True. Throwing cigarette butts or rubbish from a vehicle is prohibited. It endangers other road users and can start fires.
At night, a driver may travel without turning on the head lights since there are constructed street lights.
False. Headlights need to be switched on for nighttime driving regardless of nearby street lighting.
A police officer or a traffic warden gives the instruction. But I ignored it, because I followed the traffic light facing on me.
False. A police officer's or traffic warden's direction takes priority here and must be obeyed.
When you cross the railway crossing, it is better to change your gears to prevent your vehicle from stalling on the railway crossing.
False. To avoid stalling on the tracks, cross in low gear while keeping your speed steady, without shifting.
When you cross a railway crossing, it is enough if you stop just before the railway crossing and check safety with your eyes.
False. Before crossing railway tracks, come to a stop right at the crossing and verify safety in each direction using both sight and hearing.
We should not drive with high heeled shoes or Japanese `Geta`.
True. High heels and geta make it hard to work the pedals safely, so wear shoes suitable for driving.
When passing the oncoming vehicle with high beam, I turned off the headlight.
False. Rather than switching the headlights off entirely, you should dim them or drop to low beam when meeting an oncoming car.
The maximum speed limit which indicates by road sign or road marking, you must not exceed even when passing another motor vehicle.
True. A maximum speed limit applies at all times. You must not exceed it even while overtaking another vehicle.
If a traffic signal is located at a railway crossing, drivers can cross the railway crossing by observing the traffic signal.
True. At a railway crossing with a traffic signal, you may follow the signal and cross without stopping, but you must still check that it is safe.
When a ”left turn permitted” sign is located at the left edge of the road or attached to the traffic signal, vehicles have priority over pedestrian for turning left.
False. A 'left turn permitted' sign never grants priority to the turning vehicle. It still must not get in the way of pedestrians, bicycles, or other vehicles that are moving through on a green light.
When moped riders make a square right turn, they do not need to give the signal.
False. Moped riders making a two-step (square) right turn must still give a right-turn signal, starting 30 meters before the intersection.
When pedestrians are crossing on or near an intersection without a pedestrian crossing, drivers must not obstruct them.
True. A driver near or at a junction lacking a marked crosswalk is not allowed to get in the way of someone walking across. Where an actual crosswalk exists, stopping is required whenever a pedestrian is crossing or plainly about to.
At an intersection of two roads crossing, the road that the centerline and vehicle lanes go through the intersection is a priority road.
True. A road whose centerline or vehicle lane lines continue through the intersection is a priority road, even without a priority road sign.
When you push a motorcycle with a side car on the side walk, if you turn off the engine, you considered as a pedestrian.
False. Walking a two-wheeler by hand counts as being a `pedestrian`, so it may go on the sidewalk, but that status is lost if its engine is running, it carries a sidecar, or it is towing something, and it can no longer be pushed there.
A general motorized bicycle making a right turn at an intersection must use the square right turn in all situations.
False. The square right-turn method is required for a general motorized bicycle only at signalized junctions where its direction has three or more lanes, or wherever a square right-turn sign is in place. In any other case, it turns right the same way a motor vehicle does.
I drove in the climbing lane on an expressway at 20km/h.
True. That 50 km/h minimum only governs the main lanes; a climbing lane isn't held to it.
When riding a motorcycle into a bend, slow down enough ahead of time while you are still on a straight road. Do not disengage the clutch in the bend; keep the power of the engine on the wheels.
True. Slow down on the straight before the bend. In the bend, keep the clutch engaged so engine power stays on the wheels, and control speed with the accelerator grip.
Motorcycles riders should slow down in the middle of a curve.
False. Mid-curve, a motorcyclist manages speed through the throttle grip, keeping the clutch engaged so engine power stays applied to the tires, and only adds a bit of throttle in the curve's later stage once the way ahead looks clear.
The maximum speed limit for all middle-sized trucks are 90 km/h on national expressways.
False. Not all middle-sized trucks. Specific middle-sized trucks (total weight 8 tons or more, or loading capacity 5 tons or more) are limited to 90 km/hr. Other middle-sized trucks (total weight under 8 tons and loading capacity under 5 tons) are limited to 100 km/hr.
I stopped within 1m from a fire hydrant to let passengers in/out.
True. Parking is prohibited within 5 m of a fire hydrant, but stopping to let passengers in or out is allowed there.
When you exit a tunnel, you should slow down so that your eyes can adjust to the light.
True. Coming out of a tunnel, slowing down helps your eyes adjust to the sudden brightness.
I noticed the load fell while I was driving on the express way, but stopping, parking and reversing were prohibited so I reported about it after I got out from the express way.
False. If cargo falls off on an expressway, pull over right away onto a side strip or hard shoulder and call the police rather than retrieving it yourself, since that would be too dangerous.
When parking or stopping on a road without a sidewalk or a side strip, you must make space at least 0.75 meters on the left hand side of the vehicle to allow pedestrians to proceed.
False. Without a sidewalk or side strip present, a vehicle simply parks or stops next to the roadway, with no need to leave pedestrian clearance.
When driving near safety zone with pedestrians, drivers must slow down.
True. When pedestrians are on a safety zone, drivers passing beside it must slow down.
Motor vehicles (except two-wheeled vehicles) proceeding on roads without sidewalks or side strips must not drive on the hard shoulder (area within 0.5 meters from the edge of the road).
True. On a road with no sidewalk or side strip, motor vehicles must not run onto the hard shoulder, the area within 0.5 m of the road edge, because it may be weak.
When a road ahead is congested, you are allowed to stop your vehicle on a pedestrian crossing.
False. Vehicles must avoid entering a railway crossing, pedestrian crossing, or bicycle crossing zone whenever slow-moving or congested traffic ahead might leave them stuck stopped inside it.
When overtaking, if a vehicle ahead has pulled over to the middle of the road to make a right turn, you should pass on the left hand side of the vehicle.
True. When the vehicle ahead has moved to the center of the road to turn right, you overtake it on its left side.
On a pedestrian crossing or bicycle crossing zone, or within 30 meters before it, you must not overtake or pass other motor vehicles or general motorized bicycles.
True. A pedestrian crossing or bicycle crossing zone, along with the 30 m leading up to it, is off-limits for overtaking or passing other motor vehicles and general motorized bicycles.
After you overtake another motor vehicle or moped in front of you, you are required to come back to your original lane as soon as possible.
False. Before merging back, a driver has to confirm the other vehicle has been fully passed by watching for it to appear in the rear-view mirror, then signal and ease back over gradually; rushing to cut back in right away creates a real risk of a crash.
Motor vehicles are allowed to drive on the exclusive lane for buses when it is clear that there are no buses.
False. Motor vehicles other than special light equipment are barred from a bus-exclusive lane even when no bus is around, though using it briefly to avoid a hazard or make a left turn is acceptable.
You can drive special light equipments and mopeds with a large motor vehicle license.
True. A large motor vehicle license also covers medium, semi-medium and regular motor vehicles, special light equipment and mopeds.
The loading capacity of moped is 30kg and its of motorcycle is 60kg.
True. The load limit is 30kg for a moped and 60kg for a regular or large motorcycle.
When the engine is overheating, it is better to stop the engine immediately.
False. If the engine overheats, pull over to the left side first rather than shutting it off right away; check whether the radiator is functioning properly, and once it is, let the engine cool before topping up coolant.
Regular inspection of regular and large motorcycles should be carried out at appropriate intervals based on travel distances and condition of the vehicle.
False. Periodic inspection (定期点検) of motorcycles is on a fixed schedule, once a year. Daily inspection (日常点検) is the one done at appropriate times judged from travel distance and vehicle condition.
Sudden acceleration is very dangerous for MT motorcycles.
True. Sudden acceleration can make a manual motorcycle lurch or lift its front wheel, and you may lose control.
You have a regular motorcycle license more than 2 years, but it is less than 1 year after you got a large motorcycle license, you are not allowed double riding with your large motorcycle.
False. Carrying a passenger is allowed once a rider has held their large or regular motorcycle license for over a year on ordinary roads, or, on expressways, once they are at least 20 and have held that license for more than three years.
At the scene of an accident, gasoline may leak from a damaged vehicle, so you must not smoke.
True. Leaked gasoline can catch fire from a cigarette or a spark, so never smoke or use a flame near a damaged vehicle.
When you want to drive a vehicle, you should first consider whether your present driving skills are good enough to operate the vehicle.
True. Drive only a vehicle you have the skill to handle safely. If you are not confident with a vehicle, get more practice before driving it.
When you are going for a long journey, it is better not to plan the journey but take things as they come.
False. It's wiser to map out an unhurried route ahead of time, noting the directions, roughly how long the trip will take, and rest stops; skipping this planning risks getting lost or causing an accident.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the real karimen test?
No. It is a practice test in the same format: 50 true-or-false statements, 30 minutes and a pass mark of 45 out of 50. The questions are original practice questions written by Karimen EN, not reproduced exam content.
Which tests does it prepare for?
All three of Japan's licence written tests. The karimen (provisional licence) test and the gaimen kirikae (foreign licence conversion) knowledge check use exactly this format: 50 true-or-false questions, 30 minutes, 45 to pass. The honmen (full licence) test draws on the same traffic rules in a longer paper of 90 statements plus 5 illustrated questions in 50 minutes, also with a 90% pass mark, so the same practice applies.
Is the mock test in English?
Yes, every question and explanation is in English, the same as the English paper offered at prefectural licence centres in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi and most other prefectures.
How is it scored?
One point per question, no negative marking. 45 or more out of 50 passes, the same 90% threshold as the real test. The clock submits your answers automatically when it reaches zero.
Can I take it more than once?
Yes. The question order is shuffled on every attempt, and your best score is remembered on this device.
Where do the questions come from?
Eighteen are from Paper 07, the free paper, and thirty-two are drawn from the nine paid topic papers, so the mock covers signs, right of way, speed, parking, pedestrians, overtaking, licence rules and hazards the way the real test does.
What if I fail?
Most people fail the real test by one or two marks, and nearly always on wording. Read the explanation under every question you missed, then study the topic papers for your weak areas and sit the mock again.
